Fresh fighting broke out along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border early on Wednesday morning, with each side blaming the other of initiating lethal clashes.
Pakistan's armed forces announced that its troops had eliminated "15-20 Afghan Taliban" and wounded many in the Spin Boldak frontier area.
A Afghan authorities representative claimed that 12 non-combatants had been fatally struck and over a hundred wounded by artillery from Pakistan. He further stated that numerous military personnel had been killed. None of the reported fatalities could be independently confirmed.
Hostilities between the neighbors has escalated since explosions shook Afghanistan recently, which the Afghan capital attributed on Islamabad. The Taliban reject allegations that it is sheltering armed groups targeting Pakistan.
The opposing forces are not only fighting for the upper hand on the border, but also on digital platforms, trying to convince the general population that their side is inflicting more damage.
The most recent fighting follow intense border confrontations over the past few days, when the Afghan forces asserted to have killed fifty-eight members of the Pakistani military and Pakistan reported it killed two hundred "militants and affiliated terrorists". The claimed casualty figures announced by both parties could not be confirmed by external sources.
A few days of unstable peace that had lasted since the weekend were broken on Wednesday morning.
Footage allegedly of the fighting and its aftereffects have been shared on the internet and on social channels, including images said to be of those killed and blurry shots from low-light cameras claiming to be of guard positions demolished. These recordings have not been verified.
A source in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan stated that fighting erupted at around 4 a.m. local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on Tuesday). Another local in the district, who lives about a short distance away from the frontier post, said that "very heavy clashes continued for almost several hours".
"We observed drones and fighter planes soaring over us, a number of our relatives are wounded," they added.
A medical professional in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak stated that he tallied "seven bodies and 36 injured brought to the medical center", including men, females and minors.
The circumstances were "tense" and more victims were being transferred to hospital, he said.
A regional authority figure in Spin Boldak announced that "hundreds of households have been forced to flee since the previous evening due to the intense clashes". He said they were on "high alert" after a few military positions were targeted by aircraft from Pakistan. He further indicated that they had the remains of 2 armed forces members.
In a separate night-time clash on Pakistan's western frontier, the Islamabad's forces claimed that twenty-five to thirty Taliban and local insurgent fighters were "suspected" to have been eliminated.
The hostilities have prompted calls for reduced tensions from other countries including Beijing and Russia, as well as a suggestion from the American leader that he could step in to broker peace.
On Wednesday, Richard Bennett, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, posted on a social media platform that he was "deeply concerned" by reports of civilian casualties and displacement because of the clashes.
"I urge all parties to practice maximum restraint, safeguard non-combatants, and abide by international law," he stated.
Islamabad has for years accused the Afghan Taliban of allowing the Pakistan Taliban to function from their land and battle against the Islamabad government in an effort to enforce a rigid Islamic-led system of rule.
The Afghan Taliban government has always denied these allegations.
