The highly anticipated knockout match between England and South Africa in the Women’s Cricket World Cup is underway at the Guwahati stadium. England won the toss and chose to field first, hoping to apply early pressure against the South African batting lineup.
Nat Sciver-Brunt took over the bowling to replace Lauren Bell. Zero fours were given away, due to quick work in the field by Tammy Beaumont near the rope.
The South African opener, looking in great touch, struck back-to-back boundaries off Linsey Smith. A full toss was dispatched to the off-side boundary, and then a loose ball through cover point.
A brief mix-up nearly cost Tazmin Brits her wicket, however the throw from NSB wasn't on target. She then replied with a powerful shot a ball outside off past cover for four. Lauren Bell finished the over with a sharp delivery which rose over Brits' bat.
Smith delivered a controlled over. Even with the earlier chance, statistics show the English team have the top fielding record in the tournament.
A half-chance was not taken. Tazmin Brits hammered a delivery back at Bell, which flew for four runs.
Cloudy skies covered Guwahati, with the lights in use. Smith appeared more comfortable compared to earlier games but bowled a poor ball which Wolvaardt hit hard through the covers for a boundary.
Lauren Bell opened the bowling with a fresh cherry. The South African batter immediately took advantage, driving the initial delivery elegantly past cover for a boundary. A subsequent loose ball was cut for another boundary. Bell then tightened her line, allowing just one run off a wide ball.
The pitch is said to be different from the one used in the earlier match. It's been called a surface with red soil, promising extra bounce and assistance for the seamers.
The two sides have had inconsistent form throughout the tournament. The English team are considered favourites, however South Africa have the potential of springing a surprise. History shows that England have emerged victorious in earlier knockout clashes when these teams met.
“Roll up your sleeves, this is where it gets messy.” The pressure is on with both sides aim for a spot in the championship match.
